Sprouts Farmers Market Near Lakewood is the Newest in Grocer’s Dallas Plans

The Sprouts Farmers Market opening next week in East Dallas’ Hillside Village is the Phoenix-based retailer’s new format that’s about 20% smaller than its existing stores.

The 23,000-square-foot store “evokes our authentic roots of a lively farmer’s market experience,” said David McGlinchey, chief strategy officer of Sprouts. The Hillside Village store on the northeast corner of Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road will open Nov. 18 at 7 a.m.

It will have an expanded frozen food department with 115 new items, from plant-based meals and meat alternatives to the latest keto-friendly ice creams, he said. The deli and bakery have gotten extensive updates with more grab-and-go foods.

Most of the other 26 Sprouts stores in Dallas-Fort Worth are larger, about 32,000 square feet. Sprouts opened stores earlier this year in Irving and Grand Prairie.

Another store is under construction in Far North Dallas on the west side of the North Dallas Tollway, just north of Trinity Mills Road. It’s scheduled to open in the first-quarter 2023. And in Oak Cliff, Sprouts signed a lease with a developer to open a store on the northeast corner of North Hampton Road and Fort Worth Avenue. Crown Buffet Chinese Restaurant and an Elrod’s Cost Plus market now occupy the corner. McGlinchey said the retailer will move forward on the Oak Cliff store as soon as the city and the developer complete plans. Sprouts expects to open that store in 2024, he said.

Dallas-Fort Worth is “a good market for us. Customers like what we do. They want to eat healthy, fresh food,” McGlinchey said. “The good thing about us is that we do well in middle-, high- and low-income areas.”

McGlinchey said even with a big player like San Antonio-based H-E-B expanding into the market, “there’s room to grow in D-FW.”

A former Stein Mart store was torn down in the Hillside Village shopping center to make room for a new building for Sprouts. Shopping center owner Northwood Retail has remodeled Hillside and brought in new tenants including Parlor’s Ice Creams, Susie Cakes and Boardroom Salon.

Late last year, the Froggie’s 5 & 10 toy store and Betty Lou gift shop opened in Hillside Village after leaving Knox Street, where they had been staples for almost 25 years.

Sprouts Farmers Market, a chain of 380 stores in 23 states, raised its full-year outlook on Tuesday after reporting stronger third-quarter results.

The retailer has told Wall Street investors that the new format provides improved economics, with higher margins and lower costs versus the old format. Sprouts says it expects sales from the new format to stay the same or increase.
